Lessons Learned from Grumpy the Gator by Melissa Henderson

Lessons Learned from “Grumpy the Gator”

When my husband and I moved from Virginia to South Carolina years ago, there were many new adventures and things to learn. On one of the first days in our new home, I looked outside to see an alligator sunning on the bank by the pond across the street. I ran to my next-door neighbor’s home, frantically knocked on the door, and when she answered, I shouted, “There’s a gator! There’s a gator!” There were many lessons learned from “Grumpy the Gator”.

My sweet neighbor responded with a smile. She spoke in a calm voice. “Melissa, that’s the gator that visits every day. Just don’t go near the pond.” My breath slowed, and my voice stopped quivering. “Oh, I didn’t know there were gators around here.” That was one of my first lessons learned as my husband and I adjusted to life in the Lowcountry.

As Spring turned into Summer, and more gators were seen around the local ponds, I noticed some folks trying to feed the gators. I had been warned not to feed the gators because they would associate people with food. Warnings were issued by neighborhood homeowner associations.
These strong gators needed to be respected and left alone.

Our grandkids came to visit, and the idea for a new children’s book was created. We like to take walks to the ponds and look for turtles, herons, egrets, and gators. I always caution the children to stay away from the pond. If you see a gator, tell an adult.

“Grumpy the Gator” became a great way to teach our grandchildren and other children about the importance of staying away from ponds. When I read to children at schools, pre-schools, and other places, I enjoy having the kids make grumpy faces to look like the gator in the book.

I enjoy hearing stories from children about the gators in their neighborhood. Yes, sometimes the stories are a bit embellished. That’s fine. Everyone needs laughter and to use their imagination.

Please look for “Grumpy the Gator” on sites where books are sold. Remember, if you see a gator, don’t go near the pond.
