My Introverted Ways

One of the best parts of being a writer is being part of a community that “gets” you. Writers never stop thinking. You might see a woman walking through a parking lot. Writers? We’ve got her story all figured out and ready to write down.

Part of that community for me is ACFW, American Christian Fiction Writers. Each year they host a huge conference, the highlight of the year. It’s an opportunity to network, learn, seek appointments with agents and more.acfwlogo

And I’ve yet to go.

Because honestly, I don’t want to.

In the beginning, I stated it was finances, and that’s true. Cost is involved. Yet each year I’ve been glad money was an issue, or we were on vacation that week, or there was a wedding. Then a question came up for a post about those who don’t attend.

And I needed to confess.

I’m a classic introvert. If I was presenting or if a publisher asked for my presence, I would be there. But it would be draining. The travel. The logistics. The small talk. The anticipation. It isn’t being shy, and it isn’t being snobby. It’s an introvert thing.

I write all that to say after that first post, Tanya Eavenson wanted to do a follow-up. Were the people that first replied still not attending conference? Did it affect our career?

I shared my update, and I thought I’d let you know what we all said.

I’d love for you to check it out.
