Book Review: The War on Christmas by Bodie Hodge

Handlebar Publishing was kind enough to ask me if I was interested in reviewing The War on Christmas by Bodie Hodge. With a wrecking ball demolishing a Christmas tree on the cover, I have to admit I was curious.

I’m glad I said yes. The War on Christmas takes the questions, myths, and controversies regarding Christmas and answers them through history and Scripture. I was impressed with the level of research done for each topic. The pictures are gorgeous, exquisite, even. Scriptures and quotes are sprinkled throughout the book as well.

One of the myths talked about is the use of Xmas to eliminate Christ from Christmas. Although there are people who do this intentionally, the X really comes from another language and how they expressed Christ in writing. So, there are believers who use X as a gesture of Christ in a positive way. I thought that was relevant to read because people get upset when they see the X, believing it is always meant to dismiss the real reason for Christmas, Jesus.

I thought the title was a little odd, given it answers questions and is full of history, it was more of a reference book to me. But don’t ignore this treasure because I was confused. The contents are full of details and visuals that can help anyone with questions find some answers.

My advice for those reading is to prayerfully read and ask God what choices you should make as a family. A lot of the topics here aren’t law, but a conviction. What God might convict you on, He might not me, and we shouldn’t fight about it. We fight among each other and we lose all meaning of Christmas. This book shouldn’t be used to judge, but discern and learn from.

Book Description:

  • Is it a bunch of pagan symbols “Christianized” for the celebration?
  • Why is our concept of Christmas so important for those who don’t believe in Jesus?
  • Most may say Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, but are we truly worshiping Him or just celebrating the earthly gifts we give ourselves?

Filled with family get-togethers, office parties, breaks from school, decorating the tree, and more, Christmas is a time of peace and love. So why has so much controversy clouded this sacred holiday? It has become ground zero in an ongoing culture war where Nativity scenes are nixed, Merry Christmas becomes Happy Holidays, and even the word “Christmas” is considered by some as offensive. Find the truth about Christmas and the Christian’s response to a culture that seems to be declaring war.
