Book Review: A Marriage in Middlebury by Anita Higman

I thought that choosing my favorite reviewed book for 2013 was going to be easy. Well, I wasn’t too far into Anita Higman’s A Marriage in Middlebury when I realized the contest I have for author bragging rights (if they wanted to brag, that is) isn’t over. It’s going to be close, and I know A Marriage in Middlebury is a contender.

This is a sweet romance where I fell in love with more than the hero and heroine. I loved the community and most of the characters. Sam’s father was supposed to be unlikeable, and wow, Anita Higman didn’t hold back on that.

Charlotte is well loved in Middlebury and it’s easy to see why. Her teas are popular and she serves with authentic friendship for all. She’s great with matchmaking advice, but there’s a hole in her own heart, created years ago when she agreed to demands Sam’s father put on her. Sam never knew why their romance died so abruptly, and now he’s back in town, engaged. And he thinks it would be great for Charlotte to help with the wedding.

Like I said, A Marriage in Middlebury is sweet, but not overly so. If this were a painting, it would be a gorgeous pastel. If it were a bike ride, it would be a serene tour around the lake. Whatever image you want to equate this book to, it’s something you enjoyed from start to finish, and want to re visit again.

If you love romance, rich characters who make you laugh and cry, and a small community filled with friends, I highly recommend A Marriage in Middlebury. Given we’re close to Christmas, I encourage you to purchase two. One as a gift, and one for you.

Book Description:

Charlotte Rose Hill has been serving up country delicacies, uniquely blended teas, and matchmaking advice for her quirky but beloved customers for more than 10 years. But for her, marriage seems like an elusive butterfly, always out of reach. At 18, Charlotte fell in love with a young man, Sam Wilder, but his family convinced her to walk away from their relationship. She did, and then became engaged to another man, who later died before they were married. Now, more than a decade later, Charlotte finds that she still has feelings for her first love. Initially thrilled to learn that Sam has come home to Middlebury, Texas, Charlotte is devastated to learn that he’s brought someone with him: his fiancée. But all is not lost when the townsfolk decide to get involved. Will Charlotte and Sam find their way back to each other?
