WFW: Evaporating Frustrations in a Basin

Where does time go?  It’s time for Word Full Wednesday, an opportunity to share God’s word and give Him glory. When your post is up head on over to the Internet Cafe and link up!  Hey, while you are there, I’m the marriage barista this week. Stop by for a cup, won’t you?

If you have trouble seeing the image below and you are here via WFW link, try going to my main page here.  I have a slideshow at the top that shows my images as well as a thumbnail down the page that might be easier to see.

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. John 13:14, NIV

During one stressful time in marriage I heard the Holy Spirit’s gentle voice.

Wash his feet.

As in wash my husband’s feet. I barely wanted to speak to him and this was what I was being asked to do?

I’m so glad I did.

This is the man I married.  We’ve had children together.  We know each other.

Yet washing his feet was the most intimate thing I’ve ever done. My frustrations evaporated into my basin. I felt honored to do such a servant’s act. I had tears running down my face.  God’s presence filled the room.  When I finished the most amazing thing happened.

He washed my feet.

Then the kids came downstairs and asked if they could have their feet washed.

And then asked if they could wash feet.

It seems like such a simple act, so simple it’s easy to glaze over when you read it.  If that’s you, read it again. Go to a Passion Play.

Or…wash someone’s feet.

In the denomination I grew up we practiced feet washing. I truly miss it. I’ve never washed a man’s feet (we always segregated). I’ve thought that if I ever marry again, I’d like 2 things to happen on my wedding day. My husband to serve me communion, and I would want to wash his feet. It’s what it represents to me. I’d loved how Pastor Moore shared that back when everything kind of blew up and they had that difficult meeting – it ended with Andy washing his feet. Everyone practices communion but so very few practice feet washing (and… Read more »
