WFW: Permissible, but not Beneficial

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.  1 Corinthians 10:23, NIV (BibleGateway)

Last night I finished facilitating the small group study Made to Crave.  There are so many nuggets in this book that I recommend reading it more than once. This time around 1 Corinthians 10:23 really spoke to me.

Especially in church circles, food is permissible.  Some Christian comedians would dare say food is mandated.

But I learned it’s not always beneficial.

There are so many life controlling issues and you can plug anything into what Lysa TerKeurst shares:

We’re meant to crave God, not ______.

Some of us crave shopping or gossip.  We all have our cravings and many of them aren’t illegal or sinful until we take them to an idol status.

A great question I plan to ask myself is although this might be permissible, is it beneficial?

And if the answer is no, I believe with Christ’s help, I’ll walk away.

I have heard this book is aweome but any book Lysa writes is great! Yes, we can make just about anything the center and focus of our life. But only one thing needs to be absolutely craved after..God! Great verse! I love that one!! Glad to be your new follower!

Yes, how true that is! We have such freedoms, but we must exercise responsibility and always ask those tough questions. ‘Is it beneficial?’ What a hard one for me to ask of somethings…but necessary. Great words of encouragement you have shared.

Love the visuals to this very timely message! Thank you!
I have Lysa’s book on my radar… as I too, review books and have a few stacked up waiting. I’d love to hear more about your study.

Bless you for all that you do to share and encourage!

Tracye—I had the DVD, book and participant guide for Made to Crave. I’ve never seen so many resources available for a study that made such a difference so fast. We met weekly for 7 weeks and the DVD was about 25 minutes each week. I highly recommend ladies praying about starting a small group with those materials. I don’t think anyone would be disappointed.

I’m so glad you visited today!

Thanks Dorie! I might not always make the right choice, but I love how God keeps bringing this verse to light when I’m faced with choices.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhh girl,
you speak to me! I so get it! I’ve battled the “everything is permissible” deal most of my life and have finally “broken free!” This was great! Freedom to choose….and freedom to rely on the God who knows exactly what battles we’re fighting!

love ya!

Hi Julie,
What a great verse to remember as we are tempted to crave something good but maybe not beneficial. I hope I keep that in mind in the days ahead.

I think I’ve heard of the book. I will have to look into it.

Blessings on this WFW,
Janis
