The Covenant: Messiah Brigade Book 1 by Terry Overton

The Covenant: Messiah Brigade Book 1

The Covenant: Mystery. Faith. Courage. It all begins with a box.

What motivated you to write The Covenant: Messiah Brigade Book 1?

As parents, teachers, and homeschoolers begin a new school year, I can’t help but feel a bit of excitement, being a former teacher myself. A new school year offers opportunities to introduce students to characters similar to themselves or people they know, and to teach them how the past is relevant to current times. What better way to hook kids than to have a character find a box full of secrets from years past?

In The Covenant, the main character, Zeke, is an awkward geek with few friends. The discovery of the box and the secrets inside serves as a tool of engagement for his middle school peers. Little do these kids know, this box changes everything. A bully gang has taken over their school, and Zeke and his new friends use the items in the box to figure out what to do.

Inside the box, Zeke finds a treasure trove of history and a Bible. He and his friends figure out that a veteran of WWII left the clues. The group determines similarities in the history of the takeover of Europe by the Nazis, and the takeover of their school by bullies. The clues lead the group to Bible verses that are particularly meaningful in their current situation and the challenges faced by soldiers during World War II.

This book weaves the problems of their school with biblical beliefs that guide the group to make a difference in their school.

The series continues with the group making more friends, figuring out more clues, and having a greater influence on their school.

Just a few taglines to tickle the interest of your middle-grade readers:

Sometimes the smallest clue leads to the biggest truth.

A forgotten box. A hidden mystery. A life about to change.

One box. Countless questions. A truth that can’t be ignored.

And taglines for parents and teachers:

He opened a box and found more than trinkets—he found faith.

The Bible was just a book… until it became Zeke’s guide.

God’s truth can’t be bullied into silence.
