Saturday Confession: Taking a Cue from Jimmy Fallon

I wish I could tell you I’m the first to post about Jimmy Fallon and his new gig as the Tonight Show host, but I’m not. I’m not even the best blogger posting.

(Hint, read this.)

But, I thought I’d share my thoughts just the same.

Because I think Jimmy’s onto something that I think needs to be contagious.

I’ve watched his career for awhile, and I pray what I see is authentic. What I find endearing is he seems to get what most everyone, not just celebrities, but people, forget.

We can lose it all in a day.

So, be thankful, goofy, and encouraging no matter where you are on the ladder.

I’ve seen it, and so have you. Someone gets a promotion and the name dropping starts. Or, they stop calling because your title isn’t important enough. Perhaps they stay in communication, but only to talk about them and how you can do something to further them.

I don’t want to be like that.

I remember early in my career in an office setting I forgot a name of someone that helped with a presentation. It was an honest mistake and I felt horrible. I was young and the person lit into me in front of others. Oh, I never forgot their name again, but I’ll never forget the shocked look when they were thanked for things. Because honestly, we both knew the truth.

They was expecting the spotlight.

I also knew someone who was constantly forgotten to the point of it becoming a joke with that person’s inside circle. Everyone knew that person did the bulk of the work while the person who might have brought a pen once got their name in the thank you page. It was hard at first, but God spoke to that person as they enjoyed their backyard with a waterfall landscape.

The waterfall was God’s applause.

And that sounded better than anything man-made.

Jimmy-FallonWhether I stay behind the scenes or enter an arena someday where my speaking voice or written word is requested, I pray I take a cue from Jimmy Fallon.

  • Remain thankful.
  • Get choked up when mentioning family. At the end of the day, they remain. No one else does.
  • Be goofy. I know too many people who take themselves too seriously because insecurity is their foundation. Take a chance. Laugh.
  • Remember you not only can be replaced, you will be.
  • And from my friend, God’s applause is the only kind to desire.

How about you? Is there someone you learn from by the way they conduct themselves?
