Book Review: Goodbye to Yesterday by Wanda E. Brunstetter

Barbour Publishers sent me a copy of Wanda Brunstetter’s latest, Goodbye to Yesterday. This is part one of The Discovery–A Lancaster County Saga. This is a very short story concerning newlyweds Luke and Meredith Stoltzfus. When Luke loses his job at the furniture store because of the economy, he has the opportunity to provide for him and Meredith through taking over his uncle’s business. The trouble is, his uncle is not local and Luke has to not only take a financial risk, but travel, and Merrie is concerned.

You don’t have to be Amish to relate to Luke and Meredith. The economy makes for great conflict in fiction because it is such a reality. You can feel the tension the couple has when even a can of paint is too much cost to consider, at least for Luke. Meredith wants to see Luke happy, but the opportunity to take over his uncle’s business means spending money before making money. He has to travel and be apart. The stress is getting to Meredith, she believes.

This was an extremely quick read where I was able to relate to these young newlyweds for their real conflict. However, the story was so short I wanted to know the characters on a deeper level. I was shocked the story ended as abrupt as it did. Even with a series, there tends in endings to be a resolution. I didn’t experience that in Goodbye to Yesterday. This was a disappointment as with an author as established as Brunstetter, I expected more.

The size of the book makes it easy to carry with you and read in a sitting. If you enjoy Amish centered stories revolving around their realistic challenges, you will appreciate Goodbye to Yesterday.

I received this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
