The Uninspired Chronicles

I love a great idea.

Especially when I find my idea bank empty.

My Twitter friend, @HumairaRiaz, admitted she’s been feeling uninspired. She was in need of good ideas and working on “getting her mojo back” gave her an idea. Why not ask everyone else what they did when they felt uninspired?

Throughout April she will be posting the things that are helping her, and she’s asking us to do the same. To post your idea, just tag it with Uninspired Chronicles and link back to this post.

Me? I’m never  often uninspired. Sometimes I’m tired, often just not motivated. Then there’s the times I’m overwhelmed with other things and writing/blogging falls by the wayside. But when writer’s block hits, this is what has helped—so far:

Exercise. I know. I shudder just writing it. But even a good walk stirs my mind. I know there is scientific mumbo jumbo to support this. If the thought of this makes you want to cry, here are two resources I suggest:

  1. The book, Made to Crave by Lysa TerKeurst
  2. c25k app. Couch to 5k alternates walking and running three times a week for a few weeks, increasing the running time. Have I made it past two weeks? No. But shaking my firsts in a “Gone with the Wind” kind of way, I’m going to.

Read. If I’m overwhelmed, I’ll go to YouVersion and tackle my many reading plans. They are great. Something for everyone. If I need to check out and find rest and ideas in fiction land, I grab my Kindle. Right now I’m trying to read contemporary romance that feature a voice close to what I write.

Music. I love listening to lyrics and creating stories as I hear. A lot of devotions and marriage related posts came from music. My favorites? KLove, Air1, FamilyLife Network, and Pandora—where my stations couldn’t be more diverse. Abba? Muppets? Superchick? Tim McGraw? Michael Jackson? Disney? Chris Tomlin? Phillips Craig and Dean? They all inspire me.

And like a bottle of shampoo, if it doesn’t work—I repeat.

What inspires you?
