Book Review: Shellie Rushing Tomlinson’s Sue Ellen’s Girl Ain’t Fat, She Just Weighs Heavy

It’s a good life, reading and blogging. In one week I’ve been transported to a teen’s conflict in WWII France to present day Dixie where I was schooled in all things belle.

Shellie Rushing Tomlinson is the creator of All Things Southern and gives naive readers like me lessons on Southern life. You know she’s fun when her bestseller is called Suck Your Stomach In & Put Some Color On! I looked forward to reading her latest and was impressed to see an endorsement from Jeff Foxworthy on the front cover. You can’t get a bigger thumbs up on a southern based book than Mr. Foxworthy, right?

The book is called Sue Ellen’s Girl Ain’t Fat, She Just Weighs Heavy and Jeff Foxworthy is right, this is truly a laugh-out-loud funny book. Shellie talks about hot flashes, gas (emissions, mind you), how to handle weight gain (she just weighs heavy sounds so much better, right?) big hair, holidays, celebrities and a biggie—handling your man. This last one is called Bubba Whispering.  Told you this is a funny book.

I found myself not just laughing, but nodding my head like Shellie could see me agreeing with her. She talks about the GPS and I’m a true Yankee through and through and even I’m offended by the snotty GPS when I don’t take the route she tells me to. Shellie’s ideas for a Southern GPS get my vote.

Sue Ellen’s Girl Ain’t Fat, She Just Weighs Heavy:The Belle of All Things Southern Dishes on Men, Money, and Not Losing Your Midlife Mind is more than a good time. She also offers Southern recipes at the end of each chapter that go along with the theme of that chapter. There are also things to remember, a summary of sorts.

This was a fun read not just because the author is extremely humorous but because there is a part of me that really wants to be southern for a day. That I could say y’all and it would sound natural and that I could think about eating grits instead of wondering what they are.  That I could walk into a crowded room and introduce y’all to my yard bubba and have everyone know I’m showing off my husband. With recipes in hand and suggestions in mind maybe, just maybe, I’ve got a chance to be a belle.

If I try and fail, it sure won’t be Shellie Rushing Tomlinson’s fault.

Shellie is having a contest!

Join Shellie and the gang on June 2nd at 5:00 PM PST (6 MST, 7 CST, 8 EST) for a Southern style shin-dig! She’ll be dishing on Bubba Whispering, debunking the Big Boned Theory, and how to manage going Straight Running Crazy. If you don’t know what any of that is, then be sure to pick up a copy of the book (Not necessary to join the fun! Who knows – you might win a copy!) and join us at 5:00 pm on June 2nd at Shellie’s Facebook page. And tell your friends – she’s giving away copies of her books and some great gift certificates.

From the back cover:

The bestselling author of Suck Your Stomach In & Put Some Color On! returns with more helpful how-to’s and keen observations from Dixie.

Guided by principles from the ancient Belle Doctrine, the host of radio and television’s All Things Southern offers down-home advice on everything from health and fitness-managing thy caloric calculations without going Straight Running Crazy and surviving the Raging Inferno Syndrome (aka hot flashes)-to the Southern art of handling your man (Bubba Whispering). Whether giving business tips or debunking the Big Boned Theory, making political observations or celebrating the inevitable resurgence of big hair, Shellie is an adviser women can relate to and laugh with regardless of their age or which side of the Mason-Dixon they call home.
