Book Review: Protective Instincts by Shirlee McCoy

Posted by Julie on August 13, 2014 in Book Review, God's Word, Julie Arduini, Life Lessons |

Book Description

After losing her family, and then nearly her life when she was held hostage in Africa, grieving widow Raina Lowery only wants to put the past behind her. Instead, she’s finding her son’s toys in the woods and dodging a gunman’s bullets. Raina is trapped in a real-life nightmare—until Jackson Miller reappears. Months ago, saving Raina was Jackson’s job as a member of HEART, a private rescue team. But now it’s personal. The hardened protector wants to give Raina—and himself—a second chance at love. But first he has to save her…again.

Mission: Rescue—No job is too dangerous for these fearless heroes.

cover45772-smallWhen I go looking for a book to read that’s just for me, I look for anything by Shirlee McCoy. She’s a top notch romantic suspense writer and Protective Instincts was another book proving so.

Although I found some plot points predictable, I kept turning the pages for the well developed characters and chemistry between them. I especially liked Samuel, and definitely enjoyed Jackson. Raina’s fears were realistic and played out well.

There are some summer days left to toss a book in your bag and head for the beach. I think you’ll enjoy taking Protective Instincts along with you.

Book Review: Safe by the Marshal’s Side by Shirlee McCoy

Posted by Julie on March 5, 2014 in Julie Arduini, Life Lessons |

For a year, U.S. marshal Hunter Davis has protected witness Annie Delacorte and her toddler daughter. But now, someone is determined to stop Annie from testifying against the men who killed her husband. To guard Annie, by-the-book Hunter will have to break a promise to himself: to not get emotionally involved. After all, he already cares more deeply than he ever imagined for the sweet family of two…a family he’ll do anything to keep safe and sound by his side.

Shirlee McCoy is on my list of romantic suspense authors to keep an eye on for new releases. Safe by the Marshal’s Side is a promise Hunter Davis makes, but it is near impossible to keep. The people who most likely murdered Annie’s husband are after her, and they are relentless. Their tactics kept me turning the pages. Great suspense.

What I loved about Safe by the Marshal’s Side is it isn’t typical suspense, and it would be tempting. Law enforcement and the woman he protects. You’d think it could write itself. But Shirlee McCoy casts doubt on characters that I couldn’t figure out. Kept the suspense going. Yet, threw just enough romance to make me root for the characters even though I knew that was going to create problems for the task at hand.

Safe by the Marshal’s Side was a fast read, and a great one. I definitely recommend.

Book Review: High-Stakes Holiday Reunion by Christy Barritt

Posted by Julie on December 6, 2013 in Book Review, Julie Arduini, Life Lessons |

High-Stakes Holiday Reunion starts with a bang and doesn’t let up until the last page. Ashley is a strong heroine desperate to find her family after a kidnapping. Christopher is the only one she feels capable to help, but he’s her ex-fiancee. What makes him capable is his military background. What broke their engagement? His commitment to the military.

That’s enough conflict to keep me turning the pages but there is so much more to the story. Christopher learns the child Ashley is out to rescue isn’t her nephew, it’s her son. Their son. And Ashley’s brother may or may not be behind everything.

There’s the romance aspect, too. Those sparks they had years ago? They never went away. But Ashley never forgot her devastation when he broke the engagement. And Christopher never stopped caring.

Throw all this together and you have an action packed, you think you know what’s coming, but you really don’t page turner. It’s sweet, but fast paced and without pause. It’s romantic suspense at its best.

There’s more that I want to say, but if I go further, I’ll give spoilers. But take my word, if you enjoy a story that leaves you breathless from action and romance, High-Stakes Holiday Reunion is the book for you. Consider it a great Christmas gift for others, too!

Book Description:

Christopher Jordan sees the fear in Ashley Wilson’s eyes, he knows he can’t let her request for help go unanswered. Despite their tumultuous history, he’s the only person his ex-fiancée can trust to find her kidnapped nephew. But how can Christopher trust her when he finds out that Ashley’s “nephew” is actually his son, the one she never told him about? With a terrorist cell convinced Ashley holds the key to accessing top secret government files, time is running out. And Christopher will stop at nothing to bring their little boy home in time for Christmas.
