Braving Fiery Waters by Sarah Hanks

Braving Fiery Waters, book 2 in my Time Sailors series, released a little over a month ago. This time-travel adventure can be read as a standalone, but reading book 1, Braving Strange Waters, would be a good idea.
Each book in the series features a time sailor, someone who time travels into the past from one boat to another. In book 1, Stella time sails to the Arabia, a steamboat made famous from its excavation over 100 years after sinking. In book 2, Marina time sails to the White Cloud, the steamboat on which the Great St. Louis Fire of 1849 began. There are at least two more books in the works for this series, with a mix of new characters and old favorites.
Creating rules for time sailing has been such fun for me as an author. With each book, readers will discover more about time sailing. Here’s what we know so far:
- There’s always a mailbox on the boat someone time sails from. It looks antique, with a lion on it. Someone touches the mailbox and receives a shock. When they arrive in the past, there’s a mailbox on that boat as well. Time sailors can communicate with the people they left behind via the mailbox.
- A time sailor’s things follow them within a half an hour. Whatever he or she brought onto the boat they came from will end up back in time as well.
- Each time sailor must complete a mission before they can return home. The problem is, no one knows what this mission is. The time sailor must discover it.
- Time sailors can’t change history books. They will alter history for an individual or family, but they can do nothing that would change the written record of history.
- In the 1800s, Dr. Joseph Duncan acts as a guide to time sailors. Anyone descending from his family line has a special connection to time sailors. This includes Rodney Ducan and Bearett Duncan in present day.
More time sailing rules will be revealed in book 3, Braving Red Waters (releasing in August 2026) and Braving Rebel Waters (releasing in April 2027).
How did this whole time sailing saga begin? You can read Joseph Duncan’s origin story for free in Braving New Waters, a prequel novella. Find it on the Freebie page of my website: www.sarah-hanks.com.
These books have been a blast to write. Each character’s journey is unique and meaningful. I’ve been floored by the positive response to the series. All thanks to the Time Holder, Jesus Christ, who holds our times in His hands.
