Bra Makeover Guide: 11 Steps to FINALLY Get the Perfect Fit by Cindy Prosser
Julie’s comment: No, you’re at the right place. I’m not known as a fashion blog, but I am known to feature posts on surrender. I’m telling you, there is no greater surrender than giving up a bad fitting bra. I’m so low maintenence I went decades wearing what seemed close, but never a good fit. When I had a wedding to attend last fall I went in for a professional fit and walked out a new woman. I’m telling you, it makes all the difference.
Cindy Prosser knows what she’s talking about, so I hope her post encourages you to surrender that bad fit once and for all.
Bra Makeover Guide: 11 Steps to FINALLY Get the Perfect Fit
Finding a good-fitting bra – much less the perfect-fitting bra – is no joke. An ill-fitting bra can result in a poor body image, low self-esteem and bruised confidence. Surrender your ill-fitting bras and do away with buying the wrong size in the future by taking these 11 steps to get the perfect fit.
1. Forget what you know – You’ve been buying bras for years, so you can likely recite your size. But, is it the best size for your breast shape and size? Be prepared to surrender the size and style you’ve always purchased. You may be in need of an update.
2. Ask for professional advice – Although you can take your own measurements, it may be best to surrender your measurements for those of a professional. Ask for help at your favorite department store so that you can get the most accurate measurements.
3. Loosen up – The straps of your bra should not be doing all the work, consequently leaving marks on your shoulders. Loosen up your straps to allow all parts of the bra to work together, thereby offering the best (and best-looking!) support for your breasts.
4. Straighten up the band – The bra’s band should make a straight line when worn so that it isn’t riding up in any place. Ensure that the band stays under your breasts and on your rib cage, not creeping up onto breast tissue. Your bra may be too big if the band does not stay in place.
5. Avoid wrinkled cups or extra fabric – The cups of the bra should not be wrinkled and should fit against your skin without any extra fabric sticking out to the sides or front. Consider going down a size if the cups are wrinkled or there is extra fabric.
6. No spills – Your breasts should be held firmly in the cups without spilling over the tops or around the sides. Try going up in cup size if you have spillage.
7. Breathing room – The perfect-fitting bra does not ask you to surrender your ability to breathe…when worn, you should be able to fit one finger under the front of the band and two fingers in back. If that’s not possible, you may need to go up a band size.
8. Air out – Bras made from a cotton material will offer the most comfort, particularly on hot summer days. Choosing a bra made from breathable material, such as cotton, will offer the most comfort – particularly on hot summer days. Synthetic materials can trap moisture against your skin, causing discomfort.
9. Different store, different size – Though it would make life easier on all of us, it may be necessary for you to try on more than one size even after finding the perfect-fitting bra at one store, as sizes may not be identical across the board. A 34C at one company may not fit the same as a 34C at another company.
10. Jump around – Try jumping up and down while wearing your bra to ensure proper sizing. Do your breasts stay in place? If so, you’ve found a winner. If your breasts escape at the top, your cup size may need to be increased. If your breasts bounce around a lot, your band size may need to be decreased.
11. Comfort, Comfort, Comfort – Perhaps most importantly, surrender discomfort! The perfect-fitting bra not only improves your body image, boosts your confidence and self-esteem…it’s also comfortable! This is a bra that can be worn all day long.
You owe it to yourself to find the perfect-fitting bra. Surrender your bra-buying ways if your bras do not fit correctly and incorporate the tips into your next shopping trip. Your girls will look better than ever!

Such great advice.
Thanks, Cindy! What do I do if I have “spllage” in one cup size and puckers in the next one up? I’ve chosen the spillage for now, but I hate the bumps. 🙂
I agree. I wished I’d followed this info sooner than I did. @shortybear63
@cartinab33 That’s a great question. If Cindy doesn’t directly respond here, check her bio links. She might be able to answer there. I hate that feeling you describe!
