BookSneeze Valentine’s Book Review: Couples Who Pray
This post is part of a Thomas Nelson BookSneeze blogger book review program highlighting Valentine’s Day related books. I received Couples Who Pray by husband and wife team Squire Rushnell and Louise DuArt.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. When I read celebrity endorsements I’m rarely impressed. Yet there was something different about Couples Who Pray. Couples Who Pray not only takes the readers through celebrity testimonies surrounding the theme of married prayer like Bruce Sudano and Donna Summer, Denzel and Pauletta Washington, Frank and Kathie Lee Gifford, Scott and Tracie Hamilton, Tony Thomopoulos and Cristina Ferrare, and Gavin and Patti MacLeod but also through married couples throughout the country where we don’t know their names. Each piece shared regarding all these couples was something I could relate to.
For instance, Kathie Lee Gifford talked about the approach to prayer her and Frank share. Frank is hesitant to ask God for anything because they are so blessed. Kathie Lee believes in asking and being a good steward with what He gives. With that, they pray together and Frank praises and she asks. I was taken with Scott and Tracie Hamilton’s story because it was the first time I really saw in writing that the skater and his wife were in a true relationship not just with God, but with Jesus Christ. His testimony and answers to prayer are inspiring. I enjoyed reading all the stories from all couples.
SQuire and Louise also issue the 40 Day Prayer Challenge and that is where many of the testimonies come from. There isn’t a complex format, it’s a simple challenge to pray with your spouse for 40 days. The book is full of polls, statistics and the testimonies about lives changed with married people who pray together. I also liked the prayer tips to get started and the surveys in the back.
Sections include:
Major Benefits of Couples Praying Together
Taking the 40 Day Prayer Challenge
Factors During the 40 Days
with informative chapters within the sections
I had little expectations for this book, I really thought it would be a lot of celebrity hype around a theme I take seriously in my life. I didn’t expect substance.
I was pleasantly surprised and by the end, wanting to take this challenge with my husband.
I think this is an inspiring and Biblical book to read filled with stories from names you might know. It’s not just a great Valentine’s read, I believe it’s a challenge all married people should take any time of the year.
Again, I received this book in exchange for an honest review through BookSneeze.
