She Said “Yes”

By Jodie Wolfe

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came to her and said, “Rejoice, favored woman! The Lord is with you.”

“I am the Lord’s slave,” said Mary.

Then the angel told her:

Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

“May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her.

I was struck this morning by something I hadn’t really given much thought to up until now. Mary said “Yes” and changed history. What if she hadn’t? I suppose God would have found another virgin to carry His Son. But the point is that she chose obedience knowing it would alter her life forever.

If you were placed in similar circumstances, what would your response be? Would it be an affirmative answer or perhaps you’d be more hesitant? Would you want to check out all the possible repercussions before you made a decision?

Every day God places us in situations where we have the opportunity to be obedient. Most times it’s small, insignificant things, at least to us, not always so in God’s eyes. Will you help your elderly neighbor by bringing in the mail for her each day? Will you allow someone into traffic or will you push your way through first? What about those nudgings to send a note or text to someone who needs encouragement? To make a meal. To give the gift of a smile.

God may not be calling us to do something huge for His kingdom, but He is calling each of us to obedience—to listen to that still small voice trying to get your attention during the midst of a busy, stress-filled day. The Christmas season is a wonderful time to be thinking of others, but don’t let it end when you pack away the holiday decorations. Allow God to speak to your heart each day and obey His voice. You won’t be disappointed. 🙂

That word obedience … as I look back on my life, it’s downright amazing where it’s taken us. Sometimes, we think we’re obeying, only to have an impermeable roadblock stretched before us. That’s what happened when my husband and I were in Africa/missions thirty some years ago. And now, often I think obeying comes very close to simply listening to the heart whispers –if I listen closely.
Thanks, Julie, for getting me thinking about this area again.

I have often wondered about that still small voice. God has spoken through some pretty loud voices in history. The burning bush comes to mind. I always thought that I would know without a doubt that he spoke to me. But, lately, I’ve learned of that still small voice. It is in me. It is in my heart. It speaks to my consciousness, so that I know without a doubt that I am doing what God has told me to do. This summer I made a life changing decision, at a moment when my life changed forever – no going… Read more »

Hi Nancy,

I know the times I follow the urgings of God’s still, small voice I’m more open to the lessons He wants to teach me. Thanks for stopping by today and leaving a comment. My prayers are with you.

That’s the key, isn’t it, Gail. That we need to listen to those heart whispers. 🙂 So many times it’s easy to put it off until later and then we forget.

Thanks for sharing your story of obedience. Praying God’s blessings on you.
